The Venice Biennale is referred to as the most influential art exhibition with its 118years of history. The documentary depicts the exceptional artworks that fascinated the 55th Venice Biennale including Ai Weiwei, the anti-system artist who satirized the reality of China with the installation of stacked 886 stools owned by the elementary school students who lost their lives by the Sichuan earthquake. And Sarah Sze, an American artist, who built a gigantic installation with ordinary materials like postcards, rocks, and cotton swabs. Moreover, the Korean artist Kim Sooja puzzled the audience by locking them up in a dark room. This documentary peruses the inside of the Venice Biennale composed of ample exhibitions along its theme ‘the Encyclopedic Palace.’
Sculptor Kim Youngwon changes the landscape of Padua, Italy
Novello Finotti, described as the artistic successor of Michelangelo, offered Kim a two-person exhibition in Padua, the city of Galilei. Kim became the first foreign artist to debut at Padua, as the city has always been closed to the foreign artists. Meet Kim’s sculptures that fascinated the mayor of Padua.
Korea Artist Prize is now in its 2nd year. This year, the award went to Kong Sung-Hun. The juries commented that Kong’s achievement is highly appreciated as he challenged to manage the difficult task, ‘innovation of paintings,’ and added that his works are highly impressive compared to other contemporary paintings due to his efforts of infusing the psychological dimensions into his work. The art scene described Kong’s winning as unexpected but novel for there are plenty of experimental artworks in the contemporary art scene. Meet the distinctive artist Kong Sung-Hun, who studied paintings then transferred to electrical engineering and worked as an installation artist before returning back as a painter.
A journey seeking for Goya and El Greco, the artists of taboo and sensation
Goya and El Greco; these two major Spanish artists are so called ‘classic painters’ to us but were sensational ‘contemporary artists’ in their era. Kong as well keeps the spirit of contemporary art with the classic medium of ‘painting.’ It looks into the oeuvres of the two Spanish artists who inspired Kong. Through this journey, we sense the vitality of modernism which constantly inspires contemporary art today. We can witness that contemporary art did not just come out of the blue, but was born upon the ceaseless stream of art history and has evolved ever since.
